The barony, as is often the case, shifted with deaths in the main line of the family and later with marriages. The Crees are recorded as having joined Crawford of Bearcrofts and Stewart of Gairlies in 1605 on their plantation in Northern Ireland. Unfortunately, this adventure did not prove successful for either the Crawfords or the Crees; however, the Stewarts (neighbours of the Crees) acquired vast lands and considerable power in Ireland and were raised to the Earldom of Galloway. The Crees returned to Scotland and joined kin in Perth where they remained for over one hundred years, until Christian Cree and William Stewart in 1785 reacquired Castle Stewart for their son Robert. The Crawfords also came to no good in Ireland, and the Barony of Bearcrofts reverted to the Munro Family, related by marriage to the Crawfords. Eventually the barony found its way back to Castle Stewart and the Crees at the beginning of the 21st Century.
